Meeting the Chinese students
Alice and Jane
After our alarms went off at a painstaking 6am, we dragged ourselves to the breakfast of cold broccoli, fried rice and garlic butter, we were all feeling apprehensive about meeting the Chinese students. Tom entertained us on the coach with his interesting jokes. We arrived at the school to a welcome party and a flashing banner greeting us. We were all stunned by the welcome ceremony, as clearly a lot of preparation had gone into it. Some of the students sang in a choir, while the string group played the familiar Hungarian Dance. Another girl did an impressive traditional dance. We presented them with a gift from home: a red lambanana. We’re not sure they quite understood what it was, but nevertheless it’s the thought that counts.
Next, students had prepared presentations about global warming. It was strange, because unlike us, this was the first time they had investigated global warming, whereas we have learnt a lot about the topic throughout the school. Afterwards, we were given the opportunity to talk to the Chinese students about global warming and the difference in education.
Outside the classroom, we had a chance to talk to the students as ordinary teenagers from two very different cultures. We got along well and all of us enjoyed it – some of us even swapped e-mail addresses.
