Ni Hao! China is incredible, it’s so surreal –you can be standing infront of a house that’s crumbling and looking across a river to see a world that looks like it’s from the future.
Yesterday was the best day so far I think. We went to visit The High School Affiliated with the Xi’an J’iatong Univeristy (yes, that’s what it’s called) and worked on a project about global warming with the students. Work quickly left the topic of climate and we moved on to asking each other question. The only subjects they are taught is Science and Maths- seriously. Most of them don’t like Physics but said they had to stop talking about it as their Physics teacher was in the room with us. About 50% of the students stay in the school, as it also acts like a boarding school. They work from 8.30 till 6.00 and then have to do homework from 7 till 10! And we thought we were busy!
Lunch at the school was…interesting. They made us some English dishes including chips, chicken dinosaur shaped things and a tray of bananas which gave us a nice reminder of home – but snake was still on the menu.
Throughout the school visit everyone treated us like V.I.Ps, which we were in a way but with Sian’s blonde hair, they were in a queue. Niko, one of the girls said to me, ‘Wow, you have beautiful black hair like ours.’ I sort of spoiled it when I told her it was dyed.
I was genuinely sad to leave, but with Angel, Nika and Hao’s e-mail addresses, I was happier because at least we could stay in touch. We then had about an hour and a half to shop in X’ian and that was really fun and later we had a special hotpot meal, in which you made your own soup with ingredients on your table and special spices and powders put separately.
And then karaoke. Basically: one large room, four mics on really long wires, thirty eight girls and Mr Sterry. Eventually everyone danced and sang but Stezza was hilarious – he danced with Miss Speed! Don’t worry, we have pictures and most of it was filmed. Thanks to our guides Tom and Mei for taking us there. Terracotta Army today and I really can’t wait.
