Science is one of the two specialisms of Belvedere Academy, and it is a very popular subject with the students.

Facilities

The science facilities at Belvedere are first class, having benefitted from huge investment and new build over recent years. In total there are 8 specialist science laboratories supported by 4 very well equipped prep rooms and other storage/resource areas. The laboratories are loosely divided into subject areas and where possible Science lessons are delivered by subject specialists in specialised laboratories and supported by subject specific technicians.

Subjects and Course Offerings

Biology, Chemistry and Physics are taught as separate subjects throughout Key Stage 3.

At Key Stage 4 students have a choice to study separate sciences, or the alternative routes of Core and Additional or Core and Additional Applied Science.

The separate science subject areas are always in high demand at Key Stage 5, both from our own students and also with students from other schools who choose to join us in the Sixth Form. Students achieve excellent results and many then choose to pursue their love of science onto university.

The Core Aims of Science:

  • Understanding of key concepts to comprehend better the world around us and help solve problems in unfamiliar situations

  • Using scientific methods of investigation to solve problems in a disciplined way

  • Appreciating the contribution science makes to society and realise that applying science can lead to moral and ethical issues having to be addressed

  • Understanding that learning in science contributes to personal development because the interest and curiosity shown need to be balanced by an awareness of health and safety matters and respect for living things and the environment

  • Appreciating the powerful, but provisional nature of scientific explanations and to understand that science is always developing.

  • Giving students access to STEM careers at a variety of levels
